WILD INDIGO
Baptisia lactea

Baptisia comes from the Greek root bapto, meaning to dip or immerse. When we think of indigo, we think of blue dye.

For this piece, I used traditional watercolor for the prairie background, and for the Wild Indigo plant, I used the buckthorn berry ink I made in October. I was amazed by the range of colors I could get from the ink depending on how much water I added. Add more water, and the ink turns to a near seafoam green. No water, and the ink is a deep, earthy blue.

Sadly, (Plains) Wild Indigo has been on the MN DNR Special Concern list since 1984. Habitat loss is primarily due to agriculture and changes in land use. While not widely available in the gardening trade, wild indigo is a must-have plant for every garden.

The art print is the same size as the original painting and requires custom framing.

Prints are sold unframed. Please see the fine art print details below.

Description

WILD BLUES
Wild Indigo out on the prairie in autumn, with its stems brimming with swollen pods, would make anyone look closer. It stands like a small tree, a legume, really, helping fix nitrogen into the soil. Earlier in the season, Wild Indigo flowers are a favorite of pollinators, buzzing with bumblebees and butterflies.
