Meet The Russet Sisters

TRANSFORMATION

I’m fascinated by how frost transforms plants. After the frost, I can’t tell who they are after a cold snap rearranges their leaves and petals. It’s their second act of beauty only nature could orchestrate. My best guess is these two are from a native sunflower species I see growing tall in prairie fields.

Lebanon Hills Regional Park is a favorite hiking and exploring spot and never fails to offer more than a few inspirations on any given venture. Discovering The Russet Sisters, as I call them, I knew they would be the beginning of a new series I have been thinking and writing about these days in the studio.

Prints are sold unframed. Please see the fine art print details below.

Description

A STORY OF SISTERHOOD IN SUNFLOWERS
There is so much to imagine when looking at The Russet Sisters. Are they ready to embrace one another, or are they in a sibling squabble? You may not see it in the watercolor print, but the sister on the right holds the tiniest of twigs in one of her brackets. Her frozen posture made a cavity for a spider to spin her web, traced by drops of dew clinging to its latticework. Both sisters have a flowerhead, now bare and obscured, that looks as if they are “with child.” This could be my mind finding a connection between humans and the natural world. Other times, they look like raging dragons.

MUSEUM-QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP
Each print is produced using museum-grade giclée printing on Hahnemühle German Etching Giclée paper that complements the texture of the original watercolor. The signed, limited edition print features a subtle white border for easy handling and framing.

WHY PEOPLE LOVE The Russet Sisters
Russet Sisters isn’t just a print — it’s about recognizing ourselves animated in a pair of sunflowers after the frost. Their rich colors — not just russet, but colors of royalty — deep plum and yellow-gold. Though still on paper and ridged with frost in real life, The Russet Sisters are an energetic force of nature.
