OSAGE ORANGE TREE

Most people know of its fruit, the strange yellow-green ball with rough, bumpy outer skin that repels spiders and mice. There are many names for the tree itself, commonly known as the Osage Orange, though it’s not related to the orange at all.

What I found striking about Osage Orange trees is their deeply furrowed and scaly bark. It looks like a lava flow, with bright orange, fleshy bark exposed. I learned that Native Americans used its wood to make bows for their arrows. The wood is strong, yet supple. Before barbed wire fencing, farmers planted rows of fast-growing Osage Orange trees to create a natural enclosure to pasture livestock.

Growing up to 65 feet tall, the Osage Orange trees I observed had huge clusters of galls bulging from their bark. A sign of old wounds and infestations, galls like these are a woodworker’s dream. As the galls develop, so do the beautiful, intricate patterns within the wood’s grain.

Prints are sold unframed. Please see the fine art print details below.

Description

NATURE’S OWN WOODGRAIN
What is it about an ordinary tree trunk that makes us stop? What stopped me here was the Osage orange’s deeply furrowed, scaly bark, split open in places to reveal a bright orange flesh underneath, like a slow-moving lava flow. Clusters of galls bulge from the bark too — old wounds and infestations that, over time, coax the wood’s grain into intricate, unrepeatable patterns. It’s a tree that’s quietly been useful for centuries: its wood strong enough for Native American bowmaking, its fast growth once used to fence entire pastures before barbed wire existed.

WHY PEOPLE LOVE Osage Tree Knots No. 1
Osage Tree Knots No. 1 isn’t just a print — it’s a close look at a tree most people know only by its strange, bumpy fruit (often sold in stores as “hedge balls” to repel spiders and mice) without ever noticing what’s happening in its bark. Every gall and furrow here is its own small history of survival. Whether paired with other tree or woodgrain studies or shown solo, its warm oranges and deep grain patterns bring an earthy, textural presence into any room.
