GRAY DOGWOOD

You never know what will catch your eye during morning walks. Surprises stop you in your tracks, keep you in the moment, just as every living thing around you is doing right now.

From the Studio: Often, I don’t know the names of the plants that grab my attention. A little research tells me this is indeed a native, the Gray Dogwood, which is anything but gray this autumn morning. The gray reference denotes its bark.

Gray Dogwood is a very adaptive shrub and excellent for naturalizing complex sites such as ponds and stream banks. It blooms creamy white clusters of flowers in May, followed by white berries in late summer. Birds such as flickers, tanagers, woodpeckers, and catbirds all enjoy and quickly eat its fruit. The Gray Dogwood makes ideal shelter and nesting habitat, too.

Turning the Gray Dogwood into a tapestry of wild natural color has been an absorbing, meditative watercolor project. This piece took seven weeks to complete. I was lost in the woods and the songs of catbirds.

Prints are sold unframed. Please see the art print details below.

SURPRISE ENCOUNTER
Whenever I am out on a morning walk or hiking through my favorite regional parks, I am secretly beauty hunting. Looking for the ordinary can turn into the extraordinary. That was the case with the Gray Dogwood. We hadn’t been properly introduced; that is, I didn’t know the name of this striking, berry-laden shrub dressed in striking colors. From its bright foliage, I could hear a family mewing, a catbird undetected, calling from one of its branches.
