GOLDENROD GALL

Growing up on the prairie, I would see a prairie summertime phenomenon of swollen goldenrod stems. These orbs would turn from green to pink, then dry out with rich textures. I didn’t know then that it was the work of a goldenrod gall fly making the goldenrod stem a nursery for her eggs. Look closely, and you will find a small hole in the gall where the hatched insects leave to enter the world. Annoying to the host plant, the insect doesn’t appear to kill the goldenrod plant; rather, it leaves a striking natural object behind.

Prints are sold unframed. Please see the art print details below.

Description

HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT
This is a childhood mystery — what causes a goldenrod stem to swell into a striking orb? Nursery captures a dried goldenrod gall, a common summertime sight on the prairie that turns out to be a nursery built by insects for their young—a stillness that invites us to look closer at what we usually walk past.

WHY PEOPLE LOVE Nursery
Nursery isn’t just a print — it’s about noticing the hidden lives inside ordinary prairie plants.
