CHIOGGIA SEA PUMPKIN

Story from the Studio: A large produce-type drawing inspired by curious, bumpy heirloom pumpkins I found at The Acreage at Osceola in Wisconsin, one warm fall day. Because these strange squashes were foreign to me, I did a little research as to their origins, uses, and whether they are edible.

The best backstory I could find about my bumpy specimen is that it’s an Italian heirloom whose name originates from a seaside village of Venice, Maria di Chioggia (also called Chioggia Sea Pumpkin). The bulging rolls are the result of sugars building up under the skin. I could say the same happens to humans after partaking in too much Halloween candy. For me, it was a delight to draw its dark crevices and smooth, light orbs.

Prints are sold unframed. Please see the fine art print details below.
